WHAT THE LAW DOINCongress, in plain words

Methodology

How we write and check every page

Our edge is truth and understanding. Here is how a bill becomes a page.

Where the data comes from

Bills, actions, sponsors and cosponsors come from the official Congress.gov API, run by the Library of Congress. Official summaries are written by the Congressional Research Service. We check for changes several times a day and keep our own copy, so the site keeps working if Congress.gov goes down.

The two labels

Sourced means every statement traces to the bill text or an official record.

Analysis means interpretation. It is always attributed, and both sides get comparable space.

How breakdowns are checked

AI drafts each breakdown from the bill text. Code checks every citation and number, a separate AI review looks for unsupported claims and one-sided wording, and a human editor reads it before it is published. Each page shows its review status, and every change after publishing goes in a public corrections log.
